Right to wear arms: Armoury, the hot new fashion trend

Arms are the punctuation mark of the body: to hug, to hold, to seize, to embrace. And a well-toned arm is a very sexy thing, as Michelle Obama and the Duchess of Cambridge have proved.

But exposing your arms can also be a sartorial nightmare. A recent survey found that 75 per cent of women hated their upper arms more than any other part of their body.

But finally, fashion retailers are listening. Dubbed "armoury", stylish cover-ups, shrugs, shawls, stoles and capes are the hot new fashion trend. According to Natalie Bagley, head of womenswear accessory design at Debenhams: "It's all about the transition wardrobe. What we are seeing is a rise in items which have multi-end use, such as gilets, wraps and lightweight pashminas in a fashion colour. Cover-up pieces that you throw on and layer up for day to evening."

But it is Mary Portas's new sculptwear that seems to have revolutionised the "arm market", if rocketing sales figures are anything to go by. Working with her wife, Grazia fashion journalist Melanie Rickey, Mary Portas came up with the Armery, which costs from £17.50. It is essentially tights for the arms - a stretchy high-denier hosiery tube in various colours and weaves (magenta, deep purple, black lace), with a hole in the "gusset" area allowing you to slip your arms inside.

This curious garment hugs your limbs, neatly pulling in any upper-arm sag in the process. Wearing it is like layering without the bulk. You can wear the Armery under sleeveless tops and dresses - revealing a sexy hint of arm, or an expanse of well-toned back.

Such has been its popularity that it flew out of the store. Maker Charnos has now added new colours and an extra M/L size has been introduced.

Last week when I visited Mary Portas's new shop in House of Fraser, Oxford Street, grown women were battling over the Armery. I managed to snap up the last indigo model. And during a week of publicity for my new book, Dangerous Women: A Guide to Modern Life, it proved a godsend.

During TV interviews, awkward angles were minimised. I could sling the garment in my handbag when I wasn't using it (it weighs less than a pair of tights), and in this bonkers autumn weather it stopped me sweating with a huge coat. Charnos says students are buying them for bar-hopping.

For our launch party I wore my Armery over a Vivienne Westwood corset top. I'd intended to take it off after the photos but actually it worked just like a long pair of evening gloves.

When it comes to taming upper triceps, everyone is getting in on the act. This week Asda announced a new T-shirt that promises to banish bingo wings without the need for diets and surgery. The "body sculpt control top" decreases the circumference of upper arms through a mesh of elasticated nylon and Lycra.

And M&S has just launched a "Personalised Fit" service where you choose the sleeve length of your LBD online. According to Neil Hendy, head of design for M&S Woman and Accessories: "M&S has conducted in-depth research through customer panels and the feedback has always been that women wanted more sleeve choice and length options in their dresses."

Polka Dots – The Fashion Trend For Fall & Diwali

This Diwali season, follow the fashion trend of the fall and look hot and happening. So what's the trend of 2011? Well, it is the polka dots. Many B-town stars like Prachi Desai (once upon a time in Mumbai), Aishwarya Rai (Action Replay) are known for their polka fashion. The dotted footwear, belts, bags and bands will make a style statement if you plan to match them with the usual. Today let's discuss on how you can incorporate the polka dots fashion for the Diwali occasion. Peek into our style wardrobe.

Polka Dots Fashion In Diwali

1. If you planning to look ethnic this season, it is definitely fine. Choosing a beautiful white and black polka saree will be cool. If you are not planning to invest money on a new saree you can also select a dotted blouse (knotting in front or behind like dimple kapadia) will look hot and set the streets on fire.

2. Pairing the long dotted frilly skirts with ethnic blouses will make it look more festival kinds. You can also match a simple polka dotted dupatta with the shiny plain dress. This will have to make a difference on the grand day.

3. Beads and loops compliment well with the fashion trend of the fall. The crystals and circular patterns will add to the look of the dress. Wearing longer earrings and neck pieces is definitely a good idea.

4. The best thing about the 2011 fashion trend is that it looks like a party wear but more chic like. Women look young with the prints. Smaller dots make you look slimmer while big ones add up to the fat figure.

5. Bright lip colours and subtle eye make up suits the polka dots fashion. A simple rose blush, no eye shades (just a liner) and a bright red lip colour looks appropriate with the fashion.

Knee High Boots

IF you weren't sure about OTK boots (over-the-knee, for those who really didn't get involved), don't worry, the knee-high boot walks firmly back into our lives for autumn/winter 2011-12.

Less of a mouthful and easier to wear, knee-high boots are chic with a midi skirt, great over jeans and ideal with oversized cashmere.

SEE THE TREND ON THE CATWALK

The perfect accompaniment to autumn's Sixties styling, take your cue from Yves Saint Laurent and Jaeger London and team with retro ladylike silhouettes. At Prada, snakeskin boots were paired with graphic-print pinafores and playful accessories.

If you only buy two things this season, make it knee-high boots and a great coat - then wear them together for instant winter chic.

Kanye West, Maroon 5 to serenade lingerie models

Top models Alessandra Ambrosio, Miranda Kerr and Doutzen Kroes will strut in the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show to live musical performances by Kanye West and Maroon 5.

The catwalk event, which also will include VS models Erin Heatherton, Candice Swanepoel, Lindsay Ellingson and Lily Aldridge, will be filmed on Nov. 9 for a televised special later in the month.

The Nov. 29 one-hour show on CBS will incorporate behind-the-scenes tidbits, model profiles and red-carpet interviews surrounding the much-hyped lingeries show. Of course, several models will step out in the elaborate wings that have become a signature of this runway, and one will wear the jewel-encrusted Fantasy Bra.

Last year, that honor went to Adriana Lima.

In 2007, West pulled out of a performance at the annual Victoria's Secret fashion show due to the sudden death of his mother after she underwent cosmetic surgery.

West has been a front-row regular at fashion shows for years, and earlier this month he debuted his own collection during Paris fashion week.

'Love 2 Laugh' from Georges Style Scouts

Clementine Ralph, 16, from Gloucestershire, has been enlisted by George at Asda as the brains of fashion's next generation.

The George team, based at George House, Lutterworth, called on Clementine and three other teenage trendsetters to help them design a stylish new collection for the tween girl market. The range called 'Love 2 Laugh'.

George ran a nationwide search to discover four young budding fashionistas with a keen eye for design in July. The search was supported by teen site SugarScape and appeared across the George at Asda social media outlets including Facebook attracting interest from hundreds of girls across the nation keen to become a 'George Style Scout'.

Clementine made the cut to be part of the George 'fash pack', after impressing judges with her evident passion for fashion, her knowledge of catwalk trends and designers as well as their creative visions for the teen fashion genre.

As a Style Scouts competition winner, lucky Clementine had the chance to consult on the new Christmas collection, which is aimed at girls aged 9-16, and star in a professional photo shoot to model the first range.

Clementine said: "I've loved being a George Style Scout, working on the new Love 2 Laugh range with the George design team. I've learnt a lot about how a new collection is created, and I can't wait show my friends the range and wear my favourite items out and about knowing I've helped create them."

She helped put a name to the new girl's clothes collection and contributed their own creative visions on the garments, which with their input they now feel are perfect for the teen-girl market.

Paula Fowler, head of children's wear at George at Asda, said: "We wanted to launch a capsule collection that would genuinely appeal to girls aged 9-16, and what better way to achieve this than enlist help of four of the UK's trendiest teens! It's been great getting insight from the girls on what appeals to the notoriously hard to reach tween market and we're confident that this new collection will be a hit with all young budding fashionistas."

Designers, celebrities woo shoppers around world

Department stores, designers and celebrities wooed economically battered shoppers around the world on Thursday during the third annual "Fashion's Night Out" event to encourage spending and raise money for charity.

"Fashion's Night Out," the brainchild of Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour, was designed to jump-start an industry battered by the global recession. Shops were staying open late and offering drinks and entertainment to shoppers in Australia, Asia, Europe and 100 U.S. cities from New York to Los Angeles.

"What I love is to see youngsters," Dior Chief Executive Sidney Toledano told Reuters in Paris, where thousands thronged the fashion mecca of Avenue Montaigne, home to Dior and to flagships for other luxury brands such as Chanel and Gucci.

"All (these young people) will not become clients, but we need to seduce them today to have them tomorrow," he said.

With luxury retailers recovering nicely from the recession, some stores were using the initiative, which coincides with the first day of New York Fashion Week, to raise money for charity with limited-edition pieces.

Almost 100 designers are showing their collections for spring/summer 2012 at New York Fashion Week and dozens more are showing at other venues in the city to coincide with the semi-annual event. It is followed by fashion weeks in London, Paris and Milan.

Fashion devotees and cheering teenagers swarmed the narrow streets of Milan's fashion district for "Fashion's Night Out," many snapping up limited edition T-shirts and bags.

"This event puts us in touch with younger people," Versace Chief Executive Gian Giacomo Ferraris told Reuters. Versace recently announced a collection for retailer H&M.

Veronica Etro, who runs Etro with her brothers Ippolito, Jacopo and Kean, said it was "not a proper retail event."

"Many enter a luxury store for the first time. Fashion can be intimidating, but it should not be taken too seriously," she said as dozens of shoppers lined up for a 30 euro ($39) T-shirt featuring a color flag that was raising money for charity.

Critics have questioned whether the event has served its purpose now that luxury retailers are doing well.

HIGH-END STORES FARE WELL

While the U.S. economic recovery is wavering and consumer confidence wallows at a two-year low, high-end department stores are seeing the largest gains in sales and U.S. retail sales in July showed their biggest increase in four months.

"(Fashion's Night Out) was a good idea when it began, back in the depths of the recession when stores were virtually empty," New York Times fashion critic Cathryn Horn wrote in a recent column. "But now it's become a party."

"Though it apparently raises money for some causes, I have to believe that the costs of security, crowd control and entertainment, not to mention the traffic headaches, outweigh the actual benefits," she said.

Many retailers said they did not measure the precise economic impact of the event and some have conceded it was more of a social and charity event than sales boost.

"I look at the style and then I buy the things in shops which are less expensive and which are inspired by what we see in luxury," said Stephanie Beast in Paris.

But other shoppers said they came armed with their purses because they enjoyed making purchases on such evenings.

"This event definitely encourages you to buy," said Kristel Valladon, 30, a makeup artist who was about to buy a pair of Barbara Bui metallic gray low boots, studded with crystals, costing 1,635 euros ($2,125).

Jean-Michel Lagarde, deputy chief executive of Barbara Bui, said some customers also came back later to buy. "Fashion Night Out brings us business for sure," he said. "So we think that we should have a good (sales) weekend."

In New York, Valentino is donating 50 percent of proceeds from a special edition T-shirt to the Stiller Foundation, which builds schools in Haiti, Dolce and Gabbana is giving proceeds to Pencils of Promise, an educational charity, and Barneys New York is donating 10 percent of sale proceeds from the evening to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.

Fashion and retail is one of New York's largest industries, employing 165,000, which accounts for 5.5 percent of the city's total workforce. It generated $9 billion in wages in 2009 and the city is home to more than 900 fashion companies.

And Kendall, 15, is starting to develop a taste for the red carpet style Kim, Kourtney and Khloe are famous for. The teen models in a new photoshoot wearing a backless silver dress similar to the KaufmanFranco gown big sister Kim chose for the MTV VMAs last night.

Kendall posted pictures from the shoot for designer Sherri Hill on her blog today.

It was the 30-year-old's very first public outing since her wedding just over a week ago.

While the reality star was busy working the red carpet, she explained that her new hubby was back in his hometown of Minnesota packing.

'He's in Minnesota! Packing for NYC for a few months,' she said.
